Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair replacement surgery involves using hair you already have to fill in an area where your hair is thinning, or where you have no hair at all. This used to be a long and arduous task. But surgical hair transplants have dramatically evolved from the big "hair plugs" of yesteryear.
At Iorio Hair Restoration of New Jersey, Dr. Louis Iorio uses the physician-assisted ARTAS® robotic system for minimally invasive hair transplant surgery. Manual hair transplant procedures are incredibly tedious, requiring repetitive and precise movements to extract hair grafts from the back and sides of the scalp and implant them in balding areas of the scalp. The robot assists Dr. Iorio with the extractions and transplants, reducing manual variability while improving outcomes.
The hair transplant procedure involves two distinct phases: harvesting hair follicles and transplanting them into optimal recipient sites.
Phase 1: Harvesting from Donor Area
During the harvesting phase of the procedure, the ARTAS robot uses artificial intelligence algorithms to identify and select the best hair follicles to extract from the donor area – the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is more resistant to balding. The goal is to preserve the appearance of your donor area.
Within each hair follicle are naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular unit hair grafts. The robot will carefully extract the chosen grafts for transplantation.
Phase 2: Transplantation to Recipient Sites
For each patient, Dr. Iorio will create a customized recipient site pattern using the ARTAS Hair Studio™ software, which is transferred to the ARTAS robotic system prior to surgery. The robot then applies this pattern to precisely create new recipient sites in the balding or thinning areas of the scalp where the hair grafts will be placed. Artificial intelligence algorithms determine the optimal placement of hair grafts to ensure the most natural-looking results possible, while preserving your existing healthy (permanent) hair.
The entire process can take up to several hours, depending on the size of the transplant. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, most patients experience little discomfort and swelling after surgery. And since there are no surgical incisions or stitches required, healing time is short.
- Minimally invasive with less pain and swelling
- No linear scar after surgery
- No incisions or stitches required
- Quick recovery with minimal downtime
- Natural-looking, permanent results
- Accuracy unmatched by manual techniques
