Getting a hair transplant is a life-changing decision that can make you look and feel better and younger while restoring the confidence you have been lacking since losing your hair.
Millions of people have had hair transplant procedures, and it’s changed their lives for the better. If you are considering a hair transplant, you are on your way to a better and happier life. Naturally, you probably have tons of questions. A lot of people interested in hair transplant procedures want to know what recovery from a hair transplant is like. The short answer is: it depends on the hair transplant procedure that is performed.
The two most popular hair transplant procedures are follicular unit excision (FUE) and follicular unit transplant (FUT). Both procedures are highly successful because they are versatile and effective in delivering permanent results. However, there are some significant differences between FUE and FUT procedures that make the recovery from each a little different.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
This hair transplant procedure involves removing individual follicular units (hair) from a donor site on the patient’s scalp and transplanting them into the desired area. FUE procedures do not require stitches or incisions, and as a result, there are virtually no visible scars. There will be small puncture marks on the scalp following the procedure, but these tend to heal on their own after a few days. FUE procedures can take a long time to perform (several hours, sometimes) because the hair follicles are removed and placed individually. FUE procedures result in more natural-looking results because the hair specialist takes the time to individually place the follicular units as aesthetically appropriate.
Recovery from an FUE procedure takes about 14 days. Although there is no incision made or stitches to worry about, the donor and transplant sites are both sensitive, and there are tiny puncture wounds. In order to let them heal, your hair transplant surgeon may recommend a post procedure protocol that is important to adhere to in order to prevent any complications. Additionally, you may be instructed to use special shampoos to wash your hair for the first couple of weeks after the procedure and to stay away from any chemicals, conditioners, hair procedures, oils, and lotions. After about 14 days, the scalp will usually heal, allowing more flexibility with your hair care regime.
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)
FUT procedures involve removing a strip of tissue from the donor site on the patient’s scalp in order to extract hair follicles from it. An incision is made to remove the strip of tissue and stitches are used to close up the wound. Hair follicles are harvested from the strip and then transplanted to the desired area of a patient’s scalp. The procedure takes less time to perform than an FUE procedure, but can still take several hours to complete, depending on the amount of grafts being transplanted.
Recovery from a FUT procedure takes longer than that of a FUE procedure primarily because of the incision made at the donor site in the scalp. The wound takes time to heal, and mild to moderate pain in the immediate days following the procedure is likely. Most hair transplant professionals recommend about 14 days off from work and recommend limiting regular activities during that time. Your hair transplant surgeon may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection and painkillers to control the pain you may feel. After about 14 – 21 days, the wound at the donor site and at the transplant site will have healed adequately, and you can usually resume normal activities. You may also be instructed to use special shampoos that won’t irritate your scalp for the first few weeks following the procedure. Rest and relaxation are essential following your procedure.
